The main event for UFC 116 features Brock Lesnar against Shane Carwin. Both of these fighters are American fighters that hold a heavyweight title. Lesnar, from South Dakota originally moved to Minnesota and was star wrestler in high school. As a professional fighter Lesnar is 4-1, with his lone loss coming to Frank Mir. Lesnar took the heavyweight title from Randy Couture back in 2008, and then held off Mir in a rematch to keep the title. Carwin also beat Mir, after Lesnar had to withdraw from a match. With the win, he was awarded the Interim heavyweight title. Carwin has won all 12 of his professional matches. Our prediction for this fight: We seem to side with the odds makers in this fight. Although Carwin has never been ousted in a professional fight, we feel Lesnar has little better fighting tools.
We do not think it will be early, but our Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin prediction is Lesnar in a knockout.
The Wanderlei Silva v. Yoshihiro Akiyama prediction was a very difficult decision to make. Both of these fighters have a lot on the line, and both seem to be fighting well. Silva is 33-10 in his professional career, coming off a win over Michael Bisping. Before that, he struggled a bit losing bouts to Quinton Jackson and Rich Franklin. His opponent – Yoshihiro Akiyama, known as “Sexyama” is a Japanese fighter that has had a ton of early success as a MMA fighter. He is 13-1 and has won his last 12 fights. Our Wanderlei Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama prediction: We are going to go against the grain here.
We understand Silva is the big name here that everyone wants to see, but we like Akiyama. We will go even a step further and say Akiyama will knock out Silva.
In the Welterweight bout, Chris Lytle will battle Matt Brown as part of UFC 116. Lytle is a mixed martial arts fighter as well as boxer that is best known for his appearance on the Ultimate Fighter 4. From Indiana, Lytle is known as “Lights Out” due to his TKO style of fighting. He holds a 28-17 career record as a mixed martial arts fighter, coming in winning two straight over Kevin Burns and Brian Foster. His opponent Matt Brown is also an American fighter from Jamestown Ohio. Brown is 11-8, coming off a loss to Ricardo Almeida. The loss snapped a three game winning streak where he beat Ryan Thomas, Pete Sell and James Wilks. Despite the lack of odds placed on this fight, we are going to give our prediction for this fight.
Our Chris Lytle vs. Matt Brown Prediction – Lytle wins via submission.
Krzysztof Soszynski and Stephan Bonnar will get together in the Light Heavyweight bout in UFC 116. This fight started at UFC 110 in February, but was cut short due to a head injury to Bonnar. Soszynski is 19-9 in his professional fighting career, including wins in six of his last seven fights. Best known for his boxing and wrestling style, Soszynski was born in Poland, but moved to Canada at the age of 10. Bonnar, an American fighter has won 11 of 18 fights, but lost three straight. Those three – Jon Jones, Mark Coleman and Krzysztof Soszynski. Soszynski is the favorite according to odds makers, but we are favoring the American – Stephan Bonnar.
Our official Krzysztof Soszynski v. Stephan Bonnar prediction: Bonnar in a knockout victory.
In the lightweight bout at the upcoming Ultimate Fighting Championship event taking place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas – George Sotiropoulos will battle with Kurt Pellegrino. Sotiropoulos is known as “The Wizard of Oz” around the fighting world. He is 12-2 in 14 career MMA matches, including six straight wins. His most recent was over Joe Stevenson as part of UFC 110 in Sydney Australia. His opponent – Kurt Pellegrino, known as “Batman” has a 15-4 career record. He also is on a winning streak, taking his last four bouts. Our George Sotiropoulos v. Kurt Pellegrino prediction:
We like the way both guys are fighting, but lean more towards Pellegrino in this one. Pellegrino wins via unanimous decision.
