Since unexpectedly losing to Jason Day in 2008, Alan Belcher has been on a tear in the UFC, going 4-1, with his lone loss coming via very controversial split decision to Yoshihiro Akiyama.

Latest Alan Belcher Vs Jason Macdonald Odds;

Belcher – (-275) @ Bodog.Com
Macdonald – (+215) @ Bodog.Com

Jason Macdonald is a UFC veteran who was cut from the promotion in 2009, but was brought back for its Canadian shows at UFC 113 and 129, and has gone 1-1.

I have been notably bad at picking fights for both of these fighters, however I strongly believe that Jason Macdonald is overmatched here. Alan Belcher likely holds a huge striking advantage, and Macdonald lacks the wrestling to bring this fight to the ground.

The Alan Belcher vs Jason Macdonald prediction is that Belcher keeps the fight standing and picks apart Macdonald leading to a second round stoppage. Further, Macdonald lacks the knockout power to get lucky with one big shot, and really his only likely way of winning is submitting Belcher from the guard. The odds are steep at -275, but this is a bad matchup for Macdonald, and a small to moderate play is warranted on Belcher.

Conclusion: One should never be happy about playing a fighter at -275, but Alan Belcher should be able to keep it standing and knock Jason Macdonald out.

Brookins is the winner of TUF 12, and he notably walked through his first three opponents only to scrape by Michael Johnson in the finals. Koch is a striker training out of the same camp as Anthony Pettis, and holds an impressive 12-1 record with his only loss coming to top ranked Chad Mendes.

Latest Jonathan Brookins Vs Erik Koch Odds;

Brookins – (+170) @ Bodog.Com
Koch – (-210) @ Bodog.Com

For me, this is a very polarizing fight, with only one question: can Brookins get Koch to the ground. Brookins’ striking looked awful in the Johnson fight, and Koch has repeatedly shown solid striking skills, and more importantly brutal knockout power.

Brookins isn’t stupid, and he knows he has to get this fight to the ground. Further, virtually all of his opponents on TUF were themselves strong grapplers, and Brookins managed to drag them all to the ground, where he displayed solid back control to either end the fight or win one sided decisions.

I truly believe this is a near 50/50 fight, with either Koch knocking Brookins out, or Brookins getting Koch to the ground and submitting him. The Jonathan Brookins vs Erik Koch prediction is that Brookins uses his elite level wrestling skills to drag Koch to the ground, and finds another quick rear naked choke submission. At odds of +170, a small to moderate play has to be warranted, as Brookins is being severely undervalued here.

Conclusion: At +170, a small to moderate play has to be warranted on Jonathan Brookins given his elite wrestling skills, despite his standup deficiencies.

This is a fight between two badly undersized middleweights, with Mcgee being the TUF 11 champion and currently 2-0 in the UFC, and Yang currently 1-1 in the UFC.

Latest Court Mcgee Vs Dongi Yang Odds;

Mcgee – (-180) – Bodog.Com
Yang – (+145) – Bodog.Com

This is a tough fight to predict as either fighter might look to keep it standing, or either fighter might look to take it to the ground.

The case for Mcgee is that his wrestling, striking, and jiujitsu have looked solid in most of his fights, as he easily took Kris Mccray to the ground who has otherwise manhandled his opponents. The case against Mcgee is that he was dominated in the first round of his last fight with Ryan Jensen, who is not considered to be a particularly good fighter.

Dongi Yang showed relentless takedown abilities against Chris Camozzi, and brutal top control and ground and pound against Rob Kimmons. However, his technical wrestling ability and his striking ability have not been demonstrated. He certainly throws with a lot of power, but his striking is very stiff.

Yang can theoretically win a standup fight, and if he gets Mcgee down, things could get very ugly. With that said, the Mccray fight is what sticks out for me. The Court Mcgee vs Dongi Yang prediction is that Court Mcgee controls the fight standing early, and ultimately takes Yang down and submits him.

Conclusion: With Court Mcgee at -180, I feel there is still a bit of value, and a small to medium sized bet is warranted.

This is a major welterweight contender eliminator between one man who is coming off a one sided loss to the champion, and another on the rise who has put together an impressive four fight winning streak in the promotion.

Latest Jake Shields Vs Jake Ellenberger Odds;

Shields – (-200) @ Bodog.Com
Ellenberger – (+160) @ Bodog.Com

Jake Shields presents a fairly unique stylistic challenge for anyone he faces. He possesses seemingly very rudimentary striking ability, but he has relentless takedowns, and is very good at securing submissions from the top position.

Ellenberger is not particularly known for his technical striking, however he is also a very strong wrestler, and undoubtedly possesses a lot more power in his strikes than Shields.

The general consensus here is that this fight comes down to whether Shields can get Ellenberger to the ground. Personally, I feel Shields has fought superior wrestlers in the likes of Jason Miller, and arguably Dan Henderson. Further, Ellenberger was controlled on the ground for the whole first round in his fight against Carlos Eduardo Rocha, who himself was thrown around by Kris Mccray. One has to think based on this information that Shields should be able to get Ellenberger down.

Also of note, as bad as Shields’ striking appears to be, it really is not as bad as people make it out to be. He looked fine in the striking with Robbie Lawler, and outside of the Dan Henderson fight, which may be a credit to Shields’ chin, Shields has never really been hurt.

An Ellenberger knockout is not out of the question, but the Jake Shields vs Jake Ellenberger prediction is that Shields manages to drag Ellenberger to the ground, secures Ellenberger’s back, and finishes him with a choke.

The Jake Shields Vs Jake Ellenberger Betting Odds show that Shields is the deserved favourite entering the octagon. Following on from our Jake Shields Vs Jake Ellenberger fight prediction we feel that Shields is good value at the -165 mark (bet $165 to win $100). If the Jake Shields Vs Jake Ellenberger Odds change you should adjust your bet accordingly. Anywhere around -200 (bet $200 to win $100) a smaller bet should be placed, or you may feel a bet isn’t warranted.

Conclusion: Jake Shields should be able to get this to the ground and at -200 (available at Bodog.Com) a small to medium sized bet is recommended.

Update 17th September: Shields was available previously at -165. Hopefully you managed to lock these odds in early, as at present the Jake Shields Vs Jake Ellenberger Odds have Shields listed at -200.

Since losing in a number one contender bout to Hermes Franca, Fisher has mostly remained in the lower half of the lightweight division’s rankings. In his last four fights, he has compiled a relatively unimpressive 1-3 record, including a stoppage loss to Joe Stevenson, and a controversial decision win against Caol Uno. Most recently, Fisher lost to Ross Pearson in what was primarily a standup contest, and with a loss here, Fisher will likely be cut by the UFC.

Spencer Fisher Vs Thiago Tavares Odds;

Tavares – (-225) @ Bodog.Com
Fisher – (+180) @ Bodog.Com

After losing a competitive decision to Tyson Griffin, many believed Thiago Tavares would be a future star of the lightweight division. These dreams were smashed when he was badly knocked out by Matt Wiman, and he’s never really lived up to the expectations set for him. Most recently, Tavares was dominating Shane Roller in the standup and defending all of his takedown attempts, before being brutally knocked out with a right hand. Like Fisher, Tavares needs a win, or he could be cut from the promotion.

Here are two well rounded guys who were at the middle of the pack of the lightweight division a few years ago, but now are both very close to the bottom. Both have shown improvements in their game throughout their respect UFC tenures, however those improvements have not been able to match the skills brought in by the new blood.

Neither fighter is a particularly great wrestler, and both have competent takedown defense. For that reason, I think the majority of this fight will play out on the feet. The reality is, there isn’t enough evidence out there to believe one fighter will dominate the other standing. Tavares looked great against Roller, but Roller isn’t much of a striker. Conversely, Fisher looked way better than most expected against Pearson, lost a competitive decision to Dennis Siver, and beat Sam Stout.

The Spencer Fisher vs Thiago Tavares prediction is that the two engage in primarily a standup battle, with Fisher doing just enough to edge a close decision. This prediction is really a lot of guesswork, as it’s very difficult to predict what kind of gameplan either fighter will have, and how exactly their skill sets match up against each other. With that said, the +180 line on Fisher makes no sense. Nobody can really be confident picking either fighter here, but at +180, Fisher has to be worth a tiny play.

Conclusion: Fisher outstrikes Tavares to win a close decision, and while there’s little certainty in that prediction, at +180 it’s worth a tiny play.

Rousimar Palhares entered the UFC with a ton of hype as a leglock specialist. After quickly submitting Ivan Salaverry in his debut, he was given a huge step up in competition against Dan Henderson. Palhares would lose a competitive decision to Henderson, and bounced back with three straight wins leading into a contender eliminator with Nathan Marquardt. Palhares would lose to Marquardt in a bizarre finish while looking to the referee for assistance, and since that disappointment he has returned with a win over Dave Branch. While he’s quite a few wins away, many believe Palhares will eventually see a UFC title shot.

Latest Rousimar Palhares Vs Dan Miller Betting Odds;

Palhares – (-275) @ Bodog.Com
Miller – (+215) @ Bodog.Com

After beginning his UFC career with three straight wins, Dan Miller strung together three straight losses against the division’s elite in Chael Sonnen, Damien Maia, and Michael Bisping. Miller was able to bounce back with two straight losses, however most recently he was defeated by top middleweight Nate Marquardt in a one sided fight. Miller needs a win to stay relevant, and may be cut from the promotion with a loss.

The Demian Maia fight with Dan Miller is going to contradict what I’m about to say, but generally there is this idea that when two grapplers fight, it often turns into a standup fight (which the Maia vs Miller fight was). However in the case of Palhares and Miller, both of whom are grapplers, I feel pretty strongly that this fight will be a grappling fight. Palhares has fought superior grapplers in the UFC in Branch and Linhares, and Palhares still brought both fights to the ground.

If this fight stays standing, it’s really anyone’s guess as to what happens, since neither fighter has displayed any real standup ability. If it goes to the ground however, one has to think Palhares has a massive edge. David Branch trained with John Danaher to specifically avoid the leglocks of Palhares, and Palhares was still able to catch him. One has to think if Palhares was able to finish a grappler of the caliber of Branch that he can do the same to miller.

The Rousimar Palhares vs Dan Miller prediction is that Palhares quickly brings the fight to the ground, and leglocks Miller. It’s possible that Miller keeps the fight standing and outstrikes Palhares, and it’s possible that Palhares loses a decision chasing submissions. With that said, Palhares has submitted far superior grapplers before, and one has to think he gets the job done here. The price is steep at -275, but it’s worth a medium sized bet, as Miller’s only real tool is his grappling, and he has no hope of imposing it here.

Conclusion: Rousimar Palhares is the vastly better grappler, and since Miller’s best strength is grappling, a small play on the -275 line is warranted.

After a disqualification loss in his UFC debut, Luiz Cane went on a three fight win streak, as he outstruck all of his opponents. His next two fights would be disastrous however, as Antonio Rogerio Nogueira would knock Cane out in the first round of Nogueira’s UFC debut, and in his return bout, Cane would be knocked out by striker Cyrille Diabate after dropping Diabate early. In his most recent fight, Cane quickly dispatched of TUF 8 competitor via knockout in the first round, and would love to score a win for Brazil on this card.

Luiz Cane vs Stanislav Nedkov Odds;

Cane – (-210) @ Bodog.Com

Stanislav Nedkov is an undefeated Bulgarian fighter, who has been waiting to make his UFC debut for well over a year since being signed by the promotion. Outside the UFC, Nedkov has nine stoppages in his eleven fights, and his most notable win was a split decision against Kevin Randleman.

I have to be completely honest here. Going based off of all the footage available of Nedkov, I am fairly convinced that he is not a UFC level fighter. Similar to Karlos Vemola, Nedkov’s athleticism has allowed him to roll through lower level opposition, however he has yet to face an elite level fighter to test him. Kevin Randleman is hardly considered an elite level fighter in MMA today, and Nedkov was barely able to scrape by him. With that said, Randleman has always been a solid wrestler, and maybe it’s the case that only someone with great wrestling can negate him.

There is no doubt in my mind that Cane is the superior striker, and that if this fight stays standing, he will easily knock Nedkov out. The question is whether Cane will be able to survive Nedkov’s early onslaught and defend his takedowns. The problem is that Cane hasn’t fought any great wrestlers in his career, so it’s impossible to know.

While it’s within the realm of possibilities that Nedkov is able to win a three round decision by laying on Cane, or destroy him with an early onslaught, I feel a Cane knockout is much more likely. The Luiz Cane vs Stanislav Nedkov prediction is that Cane knocks Nedkov out in the first round using straight punches. Whether you’re willing to gamble on the -210 line is a matter of preference, but I think there’s enough value to warrant a small to medium sized bet!

Conclusion: At -210, Luiz Cane warrants a small-medium bet as he should easily knock Stanislav Nedkov out, who has no business being in the UFC.

Ross Pearson made his name by upsetting the field to win TUF season 9. After the show, most gave Pearson little credit, as he was actually the underdog against Aaron Riley. After easily disposing of Riley and Dennis Siver in striking wars, Pearson was shockingly upset by Cole Miller. In his return fight, Pearson’s activity paid off against Spencer Fisher, as he was able to outstrike the veteran in the second and third rounds to take a clear decision. Pearson is looking to continue his climb up the lightweight ladder, and to show that the Miller loss was a fluke.

Edson Barboza Vs Ross Pearson Odds;

Barboza – (-265) @ Bodog.Com
Pearson – (+205) @ Bodog.Com

Edson Barboza is an undefeated Brazilian who entered the UFC with a ton of hype, and has been a big favourite in all three of his UFC fights (including this one). In his debut, Barboza battered Mike Lullo with legkicks forcing a third round stoppage, and in his return fight, Barboza edged fellow striker Anthony Njokuani. Barboza’s victory over Njokuani was not as one sided as many had predicted, however his stock is still very high, and the UFC would love to push this striker up the lightweight ladder as quickly as possible.

Everyone is analyzing this fight the same, and it’s hard to disagree. Both guys are strikers, and all the evidence points to Barboza being the superior one. Pearson was dead even standing with Andre Winner, and Winner was crushed by Njokuani who was even with Barboza. (While MMAth is far from infallible, when it comes to analyzing how fighters will match up within a single discipline, it can be very powerful.)

The other fights on Pearson’s resume don’t bode too well for him either. Most expected Pearson to easily pick apart Spencer Fisher, but it didn’t happen. Fisher kept the fight very close, and in fact won the first round of that fight. The Miller fight is even more daunting, as Miller is hardly considered a strong striker, and he was able to tag Pearson repeatedly.

The one nagging issue here is that one has to imagine that Ross Pearson is well aware that he will have a disadvantage in the striking realm, and that he will attempt to bring the fight to the ground. The reality however is that we haven’t seen any wrestling ability from Pearson, and Barboza is also untested in this field. While it’s possible Pearson will come out with a gameplan to take Barboza down, I doubt Pearson has the necessary skills to do so, and do not fear this possibility.

Ultimately, I expect this to be a standup fight, and the reality is Barboza is a superior striker. The Edson Barboza vs Ross Pearson prediction is that Barboza uses straight punches and leg kicks to easily outpoint Pearson for three rounds, or scoring a late finish. Barboza is only losing if he comes into this fight overconfident or ill, or if Pearson’s wrestling technique is being seriously underestimated by everyone. At -265, the price is steep, but Barboza is still worth a small play as he is a horrible stylistic matchup for Pearson and simply the better fighter.

Conclusion: Edson Barboza should pick apart Ross Pearson for three rounds, and at -265, a small play is warranted.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira came into the UFC as one of the biggest legends of the sport. His first two fights saw him characteristically overcome adversity by defeating Heath Herring and Tim Sylvia, however in his third fight, Nogueira was unexpectedly dominated by Frank Mir in a huge upset. After this fight, many believed Nogueira’s beatings had caught up to him, and most expected him to lose to Couture. Instead, Nogueira showed he was still in it by dominating Couture. His next fight would see him face rising heavyweight (and current champion) Cain Velasquez, in a fight that was even odds. Cain Velasquez would knock Nogueira out in the first round, and after over a year on the sidelines (and after pulling out of a rematch with Frank Mir), Nogueira is finally returning.

Brendan Schaub Vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Odds;

Schaub - (-225) @ Bodog.Com
Nogueira - (+175) @ Bodog.Com

Brendan Schaub appeared on TUF 10, and after finishing his first three opponents in the house, was knocked out by Roy Nelson in the finals. Since then, Schaub has compiled four straight wins in the UFC, including big wins over former top heavyweights Mirko Filipovic and Gabriel Gonzaga. Now, Schaub is looking to add another big name to his list, and with a win, will likely be one fight away from a title shot.

Understanding the storyline of Nogueira is critical to analyzing the fight, because the big question here has nothing to do with how these fighters match up stylistically, but rather whether you believe Nogueira is “done”. In the event Nogueira gets knocked out, people will be talking about how obvious it was that he was washed up. If Nogueira manages to get the victory, people will be talking about how ridiculous it was to count Nogueira out given his history. To be honest, I have no idea whether Nogueira is done. However, I do know that the -225 line on Schaub has been built on the premise that Nogueira is done, and that there is simply not enough evidence to convince me that this is true.

Nobody believed Nogueira was washed up going into the Cain Velasquez fight (as evidenced by the even odds), and somehow from that loss people are concluding Nogueira’s career is over. This makes no sense. Up until that fight, Cain Velasquez had dominated all of his opponents via ground and pound, and Nogueira trained for the fight with the expectation that Velasquez would be attempting to bring him to the ground. Therefore, the fact that Nogueira was knocked out standing by Velasquez tells me nothing about Nogueira’s career status, since Nogueira did not train for a standup fight.

Stylistically, the variables appear to be in Nogueira’s favour. While Schaub undoubtedly has more power standing, his technical boxing hasn’t looked that impressive. If the fight remains standing, I think there’s a very good chance that Nogueira gets the better of the strikes. Wrestling wise, the advantage is Schaub’s, especially given his athleticism, however I have major doubts that Schaub will attempt to bring the fight to the ground given Nogueira’s legendary guard.

Ultimately, I am convinced Schaub’s gameplan is to keep the fight standing and knock Nogueira out, and I think it’s very possible that he does. It’s not unreasonable to believe that Nogueira has slowed down, and that Schaub will be able to overwhelm him. With that said, Schaub’s striking has not looked that great, and I can envision a fight where Nogueira wins the striking exchanges, or where he manages to get the fight to the ground. The Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs Brendan Schaub prediction is that Nogueira shocks the MMA world by outstriking Schaub en route to a late submission.

I have very little confidence in the prediction, as I think there are still very good reasons to believe Nogueira’s career is over, given the cumulative damage he’s taken in his career. With that said, at odds of +175, I have to recommend the tiniest of plays on Nogueira.

Conclusion: The +175 line on Nogueira has been built on the faulty premise that his career is over, and his chances are good enough that a tiny play is warranted at those odds.
